Sunshine Special Developmental School (SDS) is a school designed for children and young people with intellectual disabilities between the ages of 5 and 18 years. Currently they have 171 students enrolled. All students must have an assessment by an educational psychologist to establish eligibility for enrollment. Many students have other conditions that influence their education such as autism, medical conditions and physical disabilities. Through incorporating cooking into the curriculum teachers are able to address many areas as well as teach life skills. Class cooking would enable teachers to embed reading, writing, speaking and listening, measurement, number recognition, choice making, interpersonal development and personal learning into one authentic learning practice.

Sunshine SDS was in need of new kitchen equipment to enable this important work to commence. the Board of Management of the Western Masonic Centre heard the appeal and acted. They donated $1,369.88 to provide a complete set of kitchen equipment including a stainless steel trolley, convection oven, microwave oven, frying pan, kettle, chopping boards and lots more. The school hopes eventually to get a total of 6 sets to fully provide every group with the necessary equipment to allow every student to take advantage of the new curriculum.

Well done, Western Masonic Centre.
